I'm kinda pathetic.

I don't always follow back, but I still interact with people.

Welcome to my little corner of Alternity.

Exhaled breath carries a molecular 'breathprint' unique to each individual

Stable, specific ‘breathprints’ unique to an individual exist and may have applications as diagnostic tools in personalized medicine. Bodily fluids contain lots of information about the health status of a person. Medical doctors routinely have blood and urine analysed in order to obtain hints for infectious and metabolic diseases, to diagnose cancer and organ failure, and to check the dose of medication, based on compounds present in these body fluids.

Chrome Alum Crystals by Paul’s Lab on Flickr

This is a photo of chrome alum crystals in a chrome alum solution, at 20x magnification. Taken with my Canon SX110 IS, through a Novex stereo microscope with lighting from underneath. The crystals are grown from a saturated solution and are no more than 1 mm in diameter. Created myself, Paul, from www.paulslab.com

Why Do Old Books Smell So Good?

The ink and chemicals used in the production of a book reacts with heat, moisture and light, causing the organic materials to break down. This is especially true for books with high acidity, like those made during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Why cemeteries are a great place to track acid rain
That date of death gives a good estimate of when the stone went into the ground above the grave and began to face elements. The wear and tear on the stone that follows can be caused by freezing and thawing temperatures, lawn care machinery and rain made acidic by pollutants it has picked up in its course through the atmosphere.

From Dann:

Celebrate your shirt with style and science!
The argyle says “I’m hip!”, the cellulose (cotton) molecular structure says “I’m smart!”
